Compare Workflows

AI MIDI Generators vs Audio Generators

Audio tools can sketch ideas quickly, but MIDI keeps the notes editable in your DAW. Compare the workflow before choosing an AI music tool.

Audio Generators

Create finished tracks that are useful as references, but difficult to reshape at the musical data level.

  • Fixed audio output that cannot be changed note by note
  • Locked to generated sounds and instruments
  • Usually web-first instead of DAW-native

Examples: Suno, Udio, Soundraw, Mubert

MIDI Generators

Produce raw musical data you can edit, arrange, voice, and route through your own instruments.

  • Connect your ChatGPT account
  • Editable notes, timing, velocities, and expression
  • Route the same idea to any instrument in your session
  • Keep AI-generated ideas inside your DAW workflow

Examples: MIDI Agent, AIVA, Magenta Studio

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about MIDI Agent.

What is the best AI MIDI generator?

MIDI Agent is an AI MIDI generator for DAW integration with ChatGPT account support, provider API keys, local LLMs, and optional MIDI Agent Pro access. It generates editable MIDI directly inside your DAW.

Can AI generate MIDI files?

Yes, AI can generate MIDI files. MIDI Agent uses Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Claude to create MIDI data from natural language descriptions. You describe the music you want—melody, chords, bass line, drums—and the AI generates corresponding MIDI that you can edit, assign to any instrument, and use in your productions.

Does MIDI Agent work offline?

Yes, MIDI Agent can work offline when using local LLMs through Ollama or LM Studio. This allows for completely private, offline AI MIDI generation. For cloud-based AI providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini, an internet connection is required.

Is the monthly subscription required to use the plugin?

No. Connect your ChatGPT account, use your own provider API keys or local LLMs, or add MIDI Agent Pro. Available models and usage limits depend on your ChatGPT plan and workspace.

Can I use my ChatGPT account with the plugin?

Yes. Connect your ChatGPT account in MIDI Agent 1.2.5+. Available models and usage limits depend on your plan and workspace.

Is there a free trial of MIDI Agent?

At this time there is no free trial due to infrastructure and usage costs for the plugin.

Will MIDI Agent work in my DAW?

MIDI Agent supports VST3 in cross-platform hosts, AU on macOS hosts such as Logic Pro and GarageBand, AAX in Pro Tools, and a Standalone app for no-DAW workflows.

How does AI MIDI generation work?

AI MIDI generation uses Large Language Models (LLMs) trained on musical patterns and theory. When you describe music in natural language—like 'create a melancholic piano melody in A minor'—the AI interprets your intent and generates appropriate MIDI note data including pitches, velocities, and timing that matches your description.

Does MIDI Agent claim the rights of musical outputs?

No. MIDI generated by the plugin is your property, free for both personal and commercial use. You own 100% of the rights to any music you create with MIDI Agent, with no royalties or attribution required.

What AI models does MIDI Agent support?

MIDI Agent supports ChatGPT accounts, OpenAI and other provider API keys, local LLMs via Ollama and LM Studio, and managed MIDI Agent Pro models. ChatGPT models are loaded from the connected account.

Does MIDI Agent train models on user interactions?

No, user interactions, input files, or output files are not used for training AI models by MIDI Agent. Each provider that MIDI Agent connects to (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Deepseek, OpenRouter etc.) is subject to the terms and conditions of that provider, if this is a concern for you visit their respective company websites and review their policies.

I want to make music that sounds like *insert artist here*, can MIDI Agent help me?

Artist References: Models are not trained on copyrighted music material. Therefore, using an artist's name as a reference is very unlikely to yield the desired results or may be denied entirely. Alternative Approach: Request musical elements that capture the quality of that artist's style instead.

How MIDI Agent Fits Your Workflow

From an Idea to MIDI in Your DAW

Start with a prompt or a recording, generate the part you need—chords, melody, drums, or bassline—and move the resulting MIDI into the production session you already know. The workflow stays close to the DAW: audition it through your sounds, edit the notes, and keep developing the idea.

Text-to-MIDI

Text-to-MIDI Generation, Step by Step

Text-to-MIDI generation turns a musical direction into a concrete MIDI file. Load MIDI Agent as an instrument plugin, describe the part in plain language, and add useful parameters such as key, scale, length, tempo, genre, or note role. The selected model interprets that context and returns a generated MIDI result inside the plugin.

From there, save the latest file or drag it into the DAW, audition it through the sound you already chose, and edit the notes in the piano roll. If the first pass is close but not right, change the prompt or parameters and regenerate. The text-to-MIDI generator guide covers the prompt-to-file workflow in more detail.

The more musical context you provide, the more useful the first pass tends to be: name the section, harmonic setting, register, rhythmic feel, and relationship to parts already in the track. Keep the request narrow for a clean building block, or describe the part's role when you want a variation that responds to the arrangement.

You can also attach an existing MIDI file when you want to extend a phrase, make a variation, or develop the next section instead of starting over. Use the AI MIDI extender workflow for that second-pass approach. The most useful starting point is usually a specific musical element, which is why the same workflow can move from a broad idea into a chord progression, melody, drum pattern, or bassline.

Musical Elements

Generate Chords, Melodies, Drums, and Basslines

Prompt for one musical job at a time, keep the output focused, and refine it with the production tools already in your session.

Chords

Generate chord progressions

Give MIDI Agent a key, scale, bar count, voicing, and mood to shape the harmony. It returns stacked MIDI notes you can audition through your piano, synth, or orchestral library, then refine with inversions, voicing, timing, and your own arrangement choices.

Melodies

Generate melodies and hooks

Describe the register, contour, rhythm, density, and role you want—such as a spacious lead, a repeating hook, or a top line over existing chords. MIDI Agent returns a playable phrase; edit the notes, rests, velocity, and timing until it sits naturally in the track.

Explore the AI melody generator
Drums

Generate drum patterns

Prompt for kick and snare placement, hi-hat density, swing, fills, or a groove that fits a particular section. The result is a MIDI rhythm pattern you can send to your drum rack or sampler, then tighten the mapping, velocity, accents, and transitions in the piano roll.

Basslines

Generate basslines with a clear groove

Specify the root movement, octave, syncopation, note length, and relationship to the drums or chords. MIDI Agent creates a low-register pattern you can route through your own bass instrument, shorten or extend notes, change the rhythm, and develop into the next section.

Explore the AI bassline generator

Each part arrives as MIDI you can hear through the sound already chosen, so the next step is connecting the result to the DAW track where the production is taking shape.

Try harmony first when the track needs direction, then use the resulting chords as context for a melody or bassline. Drum patterns can establish the pocket before you refine the other parts, and each generated file can remain a separate draft until the arrangement earns a decision.

DAW Integration

An AI MIDI Plugin That Lives on Your Instrument Track

MIDI Agent loads as an instrument plugin in your production session. It returns a MIDI file inside the plugin, where you can use Save Latest File or Drag Latest File to place the result on the chosen DAW track. The plugin does not replace the instrument or library you already use.

Audition the notes through your own synths, samplers, pianos, or orchestral libraries, then correct voicing, timing, velocity, and arrangement in the same tools you use for every other MIDI part. For sessions without a DAW, the standalone MIDI generator keeps the prompt-to-file workflow available.

That keeps sound selection and MIDI generation separate: MIDI Agent supplies the musical material, while your chosen track supplies the tone, effects, automation, and performance context. It is useful for sketching a new part without abandoning the mix decisions already working in the session.

Audio-to-MIDI

Audio-to-MIDI: Transcribe Directly or Add a Prompt

Turn a supported recording into a MIDI starting point, then decide whether you want the direct transcription or another model pass to shape it.

Direct automatic transcription

Use the dedicated Audio to MIDI button, choose an audio file, and MIDI Agent sends it through the transcription path without an AI generation prompt. The returned MIDI is the direct transcription result, ready to save, drag into a track, and clean up in the DAW. See the canonical audio-to-MIDI workflow for supported use cases. For WAV-specific guidance, see the WAV to MIDI converter page.

Transcription with instructions

When the selected model supports audio attachments, attach or drop in a WAV, MP3, AIFF, or OGG file, add instructions, and send it in Music mode. The backend transcribes the audio first, then supplies that transcription and your prompt to the model for a second pass. Finish by saving or dragging the MIDI result into the session; the AI audio transcription guide explains the broader workflow.

Use the direct path when you want the notes that the recording contains. Use the prompted path when you want to ask for a focused interpretation, such as isolating a bass idea, simplifying a busy phrase, or using the transcription as a starting point for a new part.

Solo or clearly separated performances are the easiest source material to work from. As with any automatic transcription, expect to correct note starts, durations, timing, pitch choices, and unwanted artifacts—especially when a recording contains noise, effects, or multiple overlapping instruments—before arranging the part.

Why MIDI Agent

MIDI Agent vs Browser-Based AI Music Generators

Browser tools can be useful for quick references and finished-audio sketches. MIDI Agent is designed for continuing work in a DAW, where the notes, instruments, arrangement, and mix remain under the producer’s control.

Workflow
Browser-first tools
MIDI Agent
Where you work
In a browser, outside the production session.
Inside the DAW, with a standalone workflow when needed.
What comes back
Usually audio or stems; MIDI support varies by tool.
A MIDI file with notes, timing, and velocities to shape.
Existing MIDI
Often not the center of the workflow.
Attach a MIDI idea for extensions, variations, or another pass.
Audio-to-MIDI
Depends on the product and plan.
Built in for transcribing supported audio files into MIDI.
Model choice
The provider and model are usually abstracted away.
Choose from supported provider, account, API-key, Pro, or local-model paths.
Production control
Useful for references and fast finished-audio sketches.
Keep your instruments, editing tools, arrangement, and mix decisions in control.

The comparison is about workflow fit, not a claim that browser tools have no value. A browser can be the right place for a quick reference or a finished-audio experiment; MIDI Agent is the better fit when the next decision is still happening on a track in your DAW.
